Following on from our Messier catalogue visualisation, this is a visual representation of the much larger New General Catalogue. Again, blues and greens are used to represent galaxies with reds and yellows for stars and purple for the births and deaths of stars. The New General Catalogue was constructed from many sources and it orders the objects by Right Ascension (the celestial equivalent of longitude). The result of this ordering is that two sections of the catalogue effectively cut along the plane of the Milky Way (roughly NGC 1700 - NGC 2500 and NGC 6300 - NGC 7100). Those regions contain high numbers of stars and star clusters whereas other sections let us see out of the Milky Way to the distant galaxies beyond.
