why these categories?

The locations on the map show birthplaces of everyone who has been to space (altitudes above 100 km). The categories (with the exception of "space tourist") give an idea of nationality at time of flight. Category and birthplace may not match in cases where the person's nationality, or their birth-country's borders, have changed after birth. You may also be interested in exploring the data, who is in space, a breakdown of astronauts per year, our human spaceflight timeline, or our summary of human spaceflight.

You can browse our data for each individual astronaut on Github or, if you prefer, get the astronaut data as tab-separated values/JSON. Please let us know if you spot mistakes or, even better, fix it for yourself in the repository and submit a pull request. Data were compiled from the NASA Information Summaries Astronaut Fact Book, the NASA History Office, spacefacts.de and other sources for Cosmos: The Infographic Book of Space / Stuart Lowe & Chris North
